“Zai jian” meant goodbye. Pretty simple.
But a novice like me was likely to reverse this phrase – to great comedic effect. “Jian zai” meant I’m still alive.
Imagine someone bidding farewell to his guests by announcing, “I’m still alive!” It won fits of laughter every time I goofed.
